A subject can be technically complicated and still have a clear, human story at its centre.
Find the question that matters
Before thinking about a shot list, ask what your audience needs to understand. What do they already know? What is unfamiliar? What would make the subject relevant to their own work or life? Those questions give the film a purpose.
Give the detail a human context
A process or a piece of technology becomes easier to follow when we can see who uses it and what it makes possible. The detail still matters. The job is to connect it to something people can recognise, without losing the accuracy that specialists expect.
Make every choice serve the story
Interviews, footage, animation and sound each have a job to do. Used together with care, they can guide an audience through a complex idea and leave them with something clear to take away.
